1. Heart Disease

The number one killer and the top of the list for men’s health problems is heart disease. Heart disease (1) is the most common health problem that men over 40 experience. This issue can be prevented if men have a healthy diet, exercise regularly, stop smoking and follow doctors’ orders for taking their blood pressure or diabetes medication. Some common health issues men experience are high cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), strokes, and heart attacks (myocardial infarction).

Sometimes men may not know they have these other men’s health problems until it’s too late because there are not any noticeable symptoms; however, there are some warning signs to look out for, including chest pain or discomfort, dizziness or fainting feelings, unusual shortness of breath or trouble breathing, nausea/vomiting, cold sweats, and light-headedness. If men experience any issues like the ones listed above, they should seek medical advice immediately because it can lead to death if not treated.

2. Prostate Cancer

Top of the list of men’s health problems that men over 40 experience is prostate cancer. This issue (2) usually affects men in their early 60’s or men who are older than 80. If men have a family history of prostate cancer, they should be screened beginning at the age of 40, regardless of race/ethnicity.

One way to screen for prostate cancer is by having a blood test called PSA (prostate-specific antigen). However, there is some controversy surrounding this issue and screening practices due to the lack of evidence to confirm its utility and effectiveness and also because elevated levels can result from inflammation or benign conditions such as an enlarged prostate. Meet with your primary physician and discuss the best course of action.

Men experiencing pain while urinating or having difficulty starting urination should seek medical advice right away to rule out other health issues such as a urinary tract infection which can become a very serious disease in men.

3. Sudden Loss of Vision

Sudden loss of vision (3) is a rare men’s health issue that men over 40 experience, but it can be quite serious. A sudden loss of vision is characterized by a blurred or dimmed vision that is not associated with an injury or damage to the eye itself. Some symptoms include halos around lights and blind spots in your visual field.

These symptoms typically resolve on their own within two weeks. However, if symptoms persist after this time, you should seek medical advice for follow-up testing (i.e., imaging). You may need surgery to correct anatomical problems, including breaks in the blood vessels within the eye, irregular growths on the retina, etc.

4. Memory Loss

Memory loss is another men’s health issue that men over 40 experience most commonly. However, most issues of memory loss (4) are usually associated with aging and are just natural cognitive functions of men reaching this age in their life. Some men may also have memory loss due to drinking too much alcohol or consuming illegal substances, which can affect memory, known as blackouts or brownouts.

Men who find themselves experiencing more frequent memory lapses than normal should consider seeing a doctor for an evaluation because there are medications that can slow down the progression of health issues such as dementia, and men may be able to manage these health issues by managing their diet, or exercise.

There are also memory exercises, or games men can play to help boost cognition; however, men should consult with a doctor before starting any men’s health program to ensure it is safe and will not make men’s health issues worse.

5. Dementia

Dementia (5) is the health issue that men over 40 experience most commonly. This men’s health issue usually affects men who are 65 years of age and older. Some symptoms include loss of orientation (i.e., time, place), short-term memory loss, disorientation, changes in mood including apathy or irritability, troubles with language skills which includes speaking clearly and finding the right words, and trouble carrying out daily activities such as dressing and bathing.

6. Stroke

Stroke (6) is another severe issue at the top of the list for men’s health problems that affect men over 40 more than any other age group because as men get older, their risk of stroke increases, as do problems that lead to a stroke, such as high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, obesity, and smoking cigarettes.

Symptoms include weakness or sudden numbness on one side of the body, especially on the face, confusion, and trouble communicating clearly (i.e., speaking, writing), vision loss in one or both eyes. It also includes changes in health problems such as difficulty walking (staggering) and health issues they never experienced before, such as headaches or neck pain.

7. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

High blood pressure (hypertension) (7) is not only considered one of the leading men’s health problems for men over 40 but it is also considered an integral part of overall health. Men should have their health checked every year because men are at a greater risk of health problems due to age, family history, and other factors. Many men will have high blood pressure and not even know it until it is too late. Living with high blood pressure can significantly shorten your lifespan, but there are steps you can take to lower your blood pressure and live a long healthy life. Read my blog, How I lowered my High Blood Pressure in 5 Easy Steps.

Again, men over 40 are most at risk for men’s health problems such as high blood pressure (hypertension), cancer, stroke, and heart disease, which is why men over 40 should have their health assessed annually.
